What is SEO
SEO is any type of optimization on a website that allows it to be more easily found on a search engine. SEO is an acronym for search engine optimization.
Take for example the search engine Google that the latest CommScore figures show 70% of US searches are done on, as compared to Bing with 14% of the US search market, Yahoo with 12% of the US search market and the rest is split between the other minor search engines. If a potential client searches on Google for your service using a specific term called a ‘keyword’, you need your website to come up at the very least on the first page to have a chance of the potential client clicking on the link to your website. Ask yourself how many times when searching for a product or service you clicked through to the second or third page on Google and the answer is undoubtedly very few times. Even when on the first page of Google results for a certain keyword, you need your website to be listed in position 1, 2 or 3 as research shows more than 70% of the clicks are made to the first 3 results shown. Then you need to ask yourself, for how many keywords does my website rank highly on search engines and for what type of terms. How many people will search for your business by name as opposed to by typing a specific product or service.
Take for example you are a Luggage Store called ‘Bag & Go’ located in San Francisco. How many people will search by your business name – and do you show up first for your business name? Then find out how many people use the keyword ‘luggage store’ and search for that in your area. Then start thinking of synonyms such as brand bag names and replacing the word luggage with the word bag or backpack etc and seeing how highly your website ranks for these words.
SEO is a process of researching and then optimizing specific webpages in your website around search terms (also known as keywords) so that your website will come up at least on the first page of a search engine such as Google.
There are many techniques to get your website ranking highly on search engine results pages and a competent SEO expert is need to discern which techniques will be the most beneficial for your company within a budget.
Of course SEO is not just based around the techniques to get your website on the first page of Google for multiple keywords related to your products and services. There are many aspects that revolve around writing engaging content to influence a visitor when on your website to convert (meaning perform an action that you desire such as fill out a form, buy a product, leave their details etc). Website design, functionality, speed, user interface, content, graphics etc are also part of SEO – which is called on-page SEO.
